Kentucky State University: Growing Knowledge and Opportunity at JA BizTown

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana is proud to partner with Kentucky State University to bring agricultural education and career exploration to life through the Urban Agriculture Discovery Center at JA BizTown®. 

The new immersive learning space introduces students to the many people, skills and decisions involved in operating a successful farm. Students take on roles such as CEO, certified public accountant, farmer and veterinary professional—helping them discover that agriculture offers a wide range of career opportunities. 

Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo, president of Kentucky State University, said the partnership reflects the university’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and inspiring the next generation of leaders. 

“We are proud to partner with Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana to bring agriculture, business and innovation together in a way that is meaningful for students,” said Dr. Akakpo. “The Urban Agriculture Discovery Center Storefront exposes young people to the diverse career opportunities available within agriculture while helping them develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.” 

As students work together, they explore every part of the operation—from developing a brand to understanding how supply and demand affect the needs of a community. They also discover how essential math and financial skills are when managing resources, making business decisions, and keeping a farm running successfully. 

The experience connects students with products grown and raised across Kentucky that they may encounter every day. By learning where food and other goods come from, students gain a greater appreciation for local agriculture and its importance to families, businesses and communities throughout the Commonwealth.

Students also explore hydroponics, a growing method that allows plants to thrive without soil, and learn about the roles insects and other organisms play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. These hands-on lessons make science, math, business, and career exploration engaging and relevant. 

“Together with Kentucky State University, we have created an engaging experience that helps students connect classroom learning to real-world careers while gaining a deeper understanding of agriculture’s impact on our communities and economy,” said Jennifer Helgeson, president of Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana. “We are excited to welcome our newest storefront to JA BizTown!”

Most importantly, the Urban Agriculture Discovery Center helps students recognize the possibilities available to them. Whether they are interested in farming, finance, animal care, entrepreneurship, or environmental science, students can begin connecting what they learn in the classroom to real-world opportunities. 

Through this partnership, students are growing more than plants they are growing their knowledge, confidence, and understanding of what their futures can hold.
