JA of Kentuckiana Offers New Out of School Programming for Southern Indiana Youth thanks to Duke Energy Foundation

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana (JA of Kentuckiana) is offering tailored out of school time programming thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation.  JA of Kentuckiana offers an innovative approach to innovative financial literacy, work-readiness, and entrepreneurship learning opportunities for youth.  More than 400 students at various community organizations, including New the Albany Housing Authority have received programming through this grant. JA plans to continue the new initiative in Southern Indiana.

In 2022, JA of Kentuckiana found that when JA programming was being taught in school, students were often absent.  To ensure that every youth could participate in JA programming, JA decided to come to students during school breaks and after school hours.  The Duke Energy Foundation helped make this vision a reality for Southern Indiana youth, allowing JA of Kentuckiana to form new community-based partnerships and create tailored JA programming to fit the needs of the youth attending the community-based site.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to offer these experiences to kids in our Southern Indiana region”, said Jennifer Helgeson, President of JA of Kentuckiana.  “We often hear that many students in our community have missed the opportunity to participate in JA due to the pandemic or from being absent from school the day JA was taught. We appreciate the support of the Duke Energy Foundation.”

“Financial literacy, work readiness, entrepreneurship, and skill development are vital for our future workforce,” said Lisa Huber, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy.  “No matter what career path students choose, lessons learned in leadership and citizenship are invaluable experiences.”

“We are so proud of the work we do at the New Albany Housing Authority to create opportunities for our youth and those opportunities are impossible without fantastic community partners like Junior Achievement. Having different organizations come on-site and utilize their expertise to teach our kids different skill sets, and expose them to educational paths, career opportunities, life, and coping tools and resources is not only a win for our kids, but also a win for our community,” said David Duggins, New Albany Housing Authority Executive Director.

JA of Kentuckiana is excited to continue community-based partnerships and offer JA of Kentuckiana programming in the future. If you are interested in learning more, please email info@jaky.org.
